Historically “nude” has been used to describe various shades of cream or beige and originates from Western-European centric Caucasian skin tones. And, as the color “nude” is supposed to be representative of one’s skin tone when they are naked it is important to recognize what the world has attempted to define as the color we should be when we are naked and redefine why all “nudes” are beautiful, acceptable, and worthy of representation within society.

And, it truly takes time and effort to find your quirks unique, every single part of your body exquisite, and your natural imperfections absolutely perfect. Therefore, in this journal entry we will be discussing the power of affirmations as a tool to re-frame the way we view ourselves and our beautiful bodies.

These beautiful, brave, and bold women of color are supposed to be alive right now. And, their deaths, along with the deaths of countless others, are another reminder of how women of color are especially vulnerable to the institutionalized racism permeating American society. Amidst the sadness, anger, and frustration ignited by these fresh wounds it can be incredibly hard to believe Audre Lorde when she said “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” But the truth is, it is, and it’s important. So, if you’re feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, here are some ways you can practice self-love and self-care right now.

Colorism is defined as prejudice or discrimination based on skin color. Colorism directly disadvantages individuals with darker skin complexions and is incredibly evident within American society and societies as distant as the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and India to name a few. Colorism is truly a persistent form of discrimination that has existed for centuries and must be dismantled on the road to achieving true equality.
